Ode to a tomato

Seasons shifted, and I waited

peered through vines

sifted through the rest

and there you were,

shiny and plump

your bursting flesh revealing your youth

I couldn’t help but reach out for you

the literal fruit of my labor and love

Written for dVerse’s Poetics challenge for the week, where Sanaa asked us to write a poem on one of the beautiful minimalist photographs by Glenn A. Buttkus. I chose the one featured here, a close up of a simple tomato hanging off a vine. It reminded me of the scores of similar pictures on my mother’s phone – she can’t help but take one each time a new fruit or flower emerges in her garden. The emotions in this poem reflect how I imagine she reacts to each of them.

This tomato image certainly has garnered some yummy poetics. My wife eats tomatoes every day. I worry about her getting too acidic, but she does fine. Thanks.
